About

"Ten Beauty", photo by GuoGuang Opera Company

Since its establishment in 1995, National GuoGuang Opera Company has tried hard to weave contemporary ideas into the tradition of Jingju and Kunqu. “Modernization” and “literalization” are the company’s creative principles. The company aims to produce operas characterized by diverse subject matter and excellent skills.

Representative performances by GuoGuang include both famous traditional Jingju and Kunqu, as well as newly written Jingju, all of these operas have won critical acclaim and aroused heated discussions among young audience members, and a number have won the Golden Bell Award and the Taishin Culture and Arts Award.

***FreeSteps - Swinging Years*** Choreographer / Workshop Leader: SU Wei-Chia This is dance stripped back to its rawest, most honest form. As the ninth work in the *FreeSteps* series, *Swinging Years* is a captivating performance created with performers aged 60 and over. Through local workshops, participants explore the language of their bodies, celebrating the beauty and wear accumulated through decades of life. The work invites audiences to witness the extraordinary power of seasoned physicalities, conveyed through the unique histories etched in each dancer's movements. It is a testament to resilience, joy, and bodies moving with grace through time.

Artistic Director Wang An-chi, Leading Actor Wei Hai-min, and Director Li Xiao-ping have won the coveted National Awards of the Arts through GuoGuang’s productions. Tang Wen-hua, a laosheng actor from GuoGuang, has won Taipei City Culture Award and Japan’s SGI Culture Award, and Wen Yu-hang, a xiaosheng actor of both Jingju and Kunqu, has won the Golden Melody Award and Heritage Award.
